Synopsis

Robert Neville is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable and manmade. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City, and maybe the world. But he is not alone. He is surrounded by the Infected-victims of the plague who have mutated into carnivorous beings who can only exist in the dark and who will devour or infect anyone or anything in their path. For three years, Neville has spent his days scavenging for food and supplies and faithfully sending out radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. All the while, the Infected lurk in the shadows, watching Neville''s every move, waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind''s last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But his blood is also what The Infected hunt, and Neville knows he is outnumbered and quickly running out of time.

  1. I know, I'm way behind. Blasted holidays and all. Anyways, on with the show!

"I am Legend" is an interesting spin on the age old post-apocalyptic survival of humanity story. This is quite possibly one of Will Smiths most gripping roles, as there are multiple scenes when one can really feel in touch with the character. The anguish and loneliness through the majority of the movie is palpable, except for the last bit. The premise of the movie is also thought provoking to a degree, as it guides you toward your own ideas of how you would deal with that life.

There were a few plot holes I noticed though. One is the whole "faith vs. science" sub-plot. By the end of the movie, I had some perverse wish that the town they find was overrun and the woman and kid get eviscerated on screen as a "gotcha!". This doesn't come to pass though (too bad). The snare trap bothers me too. Did the infected actually devise and wrap their own rope snare to catch Neville? Remember, these are the same beings that tend to open doors/windows/solid objects with their foreheads. Therefore, I think not. Did they perhaps find a leftover snare that Neville left behind, and use it against him? More likely, but that still has underpinnings of a sentience higher than a flesh door knocker. How exactly do you domesticate manically insane infected rotweillers? I can't even fathom an answer for that.

"I am Legend" gets 2 and a half antlers, out of 5. It was a great movie until the dogfight, then the whole thing tanked for me. Guess I'll go watch "Last man on Earth" or "Omega Man" again. I'm sure the DVD's are cheaper at least.
